Peonies are timeless garden staples that reward patience with lush, fragrant blooms and decades of beauty. These herbaceous peonies grow well in zones 3–8, and once established, will provide armloads of blooms each spring with very little maintenance. Plant in fall for best results and expect blooms in their 2nd or 3rd year — trust me, they’re worth the wait.

Growth Time:
Peonies are a long-term investment that truly pays off. While you may see a few blooms in year 2, they typically reach full blooming maturity by year 3–4. Once established, they can bloom for decades with very little maintenance.
Note: To ensure healthy growth and vibrant blooms, it’s recommended to avoid cutting the flowers for at least 3 years.
Planting Time:
Plant peony roots in the fall or early winter, ideally 6 weeks before the ground freezes, so they can begin establishing roots.
Planting Instructions:
-
Dig a wide hole and plant roots with the eyes no deeper than 1–2 inches below the soil surface — planting too deep can delay or prevent blooming.
-
Position the roots with eyes facing upward.
-
Backfill with soil and water deeply.
Growing Conditions:
Peonies thrive in full sun and well-draining soil. Avoid wet spots or areas with heavy clay unless amended. Once established, they are hardy, drought-tolerant, and cold-hardy down to zone 3.
Spacing:
Space 2–3 feet apart to allow for airflow and mature growth. Peonies dislike being moved once settled, so choose your spot carefully!
